Hi Franne

I bet you can’t wait to get back to some cold temps. I could never live where it’s hot. Just doesn’t suit me but my sister loves it. Different strokes for different folks.

Love that quote from Wait Wait. There will probably be more quotes about knit and crochet now that some pretty famous people are talking about it. Have a great day.

I LOVE Clarkson's Farm! My favorite parts are whenever the character whose speech is undecipherable says something. The expression on the other characters' faces is priceless!

I always try to figure out what Gerald is saying and I don’t get any of it! But I know he is earnest in what he is advising if anyone can figure it out. Rewatching season 1 now. You and I can understand more than most because of our agricultural backgrounds.

Sitting here in Northern AZ (near Sedona) longing for cozy snow days. We actually had a snow day this week--a whole three-inch's worth! Enough to cancel school. Ay yi yi, says this native of near Buffalo, NY, shaking my head. Making plans to move back up north when my lease is up in May. I still knit and crochet with wool here, but occasions to don wool wear are few and far between. Looking forward to getting settled somewhere so I can get out my crocheted hexagons and finally sew them together, now that I'm inspired! And start some new projects, like the Scrap Yarn Knit Afghan and that gorgeous crochet afghan from last Sunday's post. I love all your saturated colors, Kristin, but there is indeed something wonderful about that combination you showed last week incorporating some subtle shades. Can't wait to get the details!

I, too, heard that story on the BBC World Service about the chicken who sailed around the world. Wonderful. My contribution to "seen and heard" this week is a quotation from Maeve Higgins, panelist on yesterday's Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me on NPR. When asked to correctly complete (according to studies) the sentence, "You are most stressed when . . . ", Maeve responded, "When I'm not near my knitting is when I'm most stressed, and I'm pretty sure that's the universal standard." I second that emotion. Looking forward to checking out all your links. Thanks so much for sharing them.

Hi Kristin, I have your patter for fingerless mittens for quick holiday knitting. It uses 3 strands of yarn and makes very sturdy and warm mitts. A note on the pattern says you have a Winter Wonderland Cap and Mitten set that is similar. I can't find it in your patterns list. I really would like the Mitten pattern, I keep trying to knit my grandaughter mittens making up the top of the thumb and mitten from the fingerless mitten pattern. Do you have the pattern somewhere that I can purchase it?

Kristin, Thank you so much for the prompt reply and helping me find the pattern. My original fingerless mitts from your pattern are made from your Julia yarn. Love them. I love your friendly newsletter .

Glad I could help JoAnne. Have fun knitting them.

Hi Kristin, I am delighted to start that hexagon squares crochet blanket that you so generously shared with us in the newsletter. I was just wondering about the 6" tail on each round of yarn--is there a reason it should be so long? Am I right in just tying off one round and then slip stitch starting on the new color? Then will I be weaving in the previous yarn? I'm kind of self-taught so always trying to make sure I am clear on the directions. Thanks! Ruth in Leeds, MA

Hi Ruth — here is an excellent video explaining why you need a 6” end. https://youtu.be/MbyVpaT1JxM

I don’t weave as much as this woman but you’ll get the idea. She is correct in saying if ends are too short the whole thing will start falling apart. I have had that happen on two of my hexagons and then have needed to repair or replace the piece.

Good luck. Send a photo if you get going on it!

Hi again, I’m having a great time making this blanket. Is it really necessary and worthwhile trying to iron them all flat? I don’t have a steamer, so would be using an iron I guess. Thanks :)

Thanks Kristin! That was super helpful. I don't know how to insert a photo here to show you the project so far...nothing seems to work 😒 but I love it...
