The sheep moving out onto spring grass
Hello Friends from Leyden Glen Farm!
Tomorrow we will be at the Amherst Farmers Market from 7:30 to 1:30. Just an FYI that we may be missing from the Saturday Amherst Market for a while as Mark is going in for hip replacement surgery on Wednesday. Take this opportunity to stock up with our farm raised lamb.
Kristin will have the first of our harvested lambs from our winter lambing that began in January at the market. These lambs grew beautifully and the meat looks fantastic - not too lean nor too much fat. Pick up some ground lamb, some beautiful chops or a boneless leg to cook on your grill.
Mark is busy trying to finish up his first cutting of hay before he goes in for surgery on his second hip replacement next Wednesday. This feed will be rolled into big bales and then wrapped in white plastic to ferment. It will be fed out to the sheep and lambs next winter. Here is a photo of a field just after mowing.
It is still rhubarb season so I want to mention a beautiful recipe that you can only make during that short (and tart) season. It is called Persian Lamb and Rhubarb Stew and is flavored with the spices coriander, cumin, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. You can find the recipe here on our website or pick up a copy at the market.
Hope to see some of you in Amherst tomorrow. If you can't get there, our farmstand at the farm is stocked with all our cuts.
Have a great weekend! Send healing thoughts as Mark recovers from his second hip replacement. Fingers crossed he mends quickly so he can get back to what he loves - his sheep and the land.
As always, we thank you for your support of our farm and family.
Your shepherds,
Mark, Kristin and Julia
